Driver Killed In Morning Wreck On Krome Avenue

Traffic was shut down in both directions of Krome Avenue on Monday.

MIAMI, FL — An early morning wreck on Monday left one motorist dead and shut down traffic for a time in both directions of Krome Avenue. The crash occurred around 7 a.m., according to Florida Highway Patrol. Both vehicles flipped over when a Ford Fusion rear-ended a truck and then burst into flames.

FHP later identified the victim who died as 52-year-old Jose Rafael Rodriguez of Miami. He was driving a 1989 Mazda B Series. The driver of the Ford Fusion was identified as 31-year-old Quelli Perez.

"Due to the collision, both vehicles overturned and traveled off the roadway onto the grassy shoulder," explained Lt. Alex Camacho of the Florida Highway Patrol, who said that the two vehicles were traveling north on the highway at the time of the crash.

"One of the vehicles subsequently collided with a tree and the driver was pronounced deceased on scene by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue," he said. "The driver of the other overturned vehicle was transported to the hospital and is currently in stable condition."

The northbound and southbound lanes of Krome Ave reopened by late morning.
