Off-Duty Officer Kills Apparent Intruder In Pinecrest Home

An off-duty Customs and Border Protection office​r, who was awakened to the sound of breaking glass, shot and killed an apparent intruder.

PINECREST, FL — An off-duty U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer, who was awakened to the sound of breaking glass, shot and killed an apparent intruder Monday morning, according to Miami-Dade police. The incident occurred at 1:29 a.m. in the 9300 Block SW 72 Avenue. The suspected intruder was identified as 29-year-0ld Robert Young.

Detective Robin Pinkard of the Miami-Dade Police Department said that the suspected intruder was pronounced dead on the scene by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue personnel. Pinecrest police were first to arrive on the scene.

"A preliminary investigation revealed that the victims were asleep inside the residence, when they were awoken by the sound of shattering glass," said Pinkard. "The victims were confronted by the subject, who had gained entry into the residence by breaking the glass on the sliding door."

Pinkard said that the off-duty officer shot the intruder. The officer was not identified.

Neither the officer or another woman who was in the home were injured.

A spokesman for U.S. Customs and Border Protection said that the officer was placed on administrative leave, in accordance with agency procedures.
