ICYMI: Publix Named America's 2nd Favorite Grocery Chain

Lakeland-based Publix has earned the national honor for four years running.

LAKELAND, FL — Publix Super Markets has been named America’s second favorite grocery store for the fourth year running. The chain that beat it out for the No. 1 spot is one that didn’t even make the list in last year’s survey conducted by Market Force.

“After not earning enough votes to make the list in 2015, Wegmans garnered double the votes in 2016, resulting in a score of 76 percent, enough to secure the top spot,” Market Force Information wrote in announcing the findings of its 2016 survey. Publix was edged out of the top spot by a merge percentage point, scoring 75 percent overall. Meanwhile, last year’s No. 1 chain, Trader Joe’s dropped into third place with a score of 73 percent.

For the rankings, Market Force asked survey participants across the country to rate their satisfaction with their most recent grocery shopping experience and their likelihood to refer that grocer to others. The results were averaged to rank each brand on a Composite Loyalty Index.

While Publix didn’t earn the top spot, customers did give the store top rankings in a number of specific categories built into the index. Publix ranked No. 1 for store cleanliness, item availability, checkout speed, specialty department service, and customer ability to find items they’re looking for. Trader Joe’s topped Publix when it came to cashier courtesy.

In the overall rankings, Market Force's list includes 15 different chains from across the country. Walmart came in last place.
