Quesadillas are Better on the Beach

This week's Matter of Taste is dedicated to an island favorite. The combination of salty air and cheesy, Mexican goodness will inevitably bring you back for more.

Summer time is here and most would agree that after a long day at the beach, Mexican food hits the spot. To wash it all down, tequila is a great chaser and is available at all of the establishments listed below. Quesadillas can be prepared a number of ways on the beach, so which one will you choose?

For $4, enjoy a simple cheese quesadilla at the Agave restaurant. The toasted flour tortilla is filled with Asadero cheese and served with sour cream. To bulk it up, add one of the following meat options: grilled chicken for $2, grilled steak for $4, grilled pork for $3 or shrimp for $4.

Enjoy the view and the food at the Sloppy Pelican. Located on the mouth to the Gulf, Sloppy's is ideal for a good sunset. Try the chicken or beef quesadillas for $8.95 or the shrimp quesadillas for $9.95. Each is stuffed with the meat of your choice and freshly melted cheese. For a different spin, indulge in the chicken, avocado ranch quesadillas for $8.95. Each dish is served with salsa and sour cream.

If everyone else in your crew is in the mood for American cuisine, suggest going to Ricky T's. It will make everyone happy. They can have their burger and you can enjoy the quesadillas of your choice. Try the cheese only quesadilla for $7.99 or go big with beef or chicken for $9.99. The quesadilla is stuffed with meat, jack and cheddar cheese and diced tomatoes.

Although VIP is known for its fish bowl margaritas, the food is pretty famous too. From the wet burrito to the tostadas supreme, there are plates of all sizes available at the local favorite. The quesadillas ($5.95+) are made with a 12-inch flour tortilla and cheddar jack cheese, black olives and jalapenos. Add beef pork or chicken for $2 more or steak or shrimp for $4 more. The vegetarian option includes grilled mushrooms, peppers, onions and tomatoes for $7.95.

There are a variety of quesadilla options at this authentic Mexican spot. If you're a plain jane kind of quesadilla lover, go for the strictly cheese at $3.75. For a green quesadilla, try the spinach for $5.25 or for a heartier option, try the beef or chicken for $5.50.
