Severe Thunderstorms Hit the Beaches
A thunderstorm pummels coastal communities, including St. Pete Beach and Treasure Island.
The worst of the rain and thunderstorms are not behind us yet. The National Weather Service reported that a severe thunderstorm with winds up to 60 mph was six miles southwest of Indian Shores. At 1:45 p.m. today, the storm was moving east, bringing torrents of rain.
People are being advised to move indoors, because frequent lightning strikes are expected. Rip currents also pose a risk along the beaches.
A severe thundrestorm warning is in effect for the following areas:

St. Petersburg, Pinellas Park, Gulfport, St. Pete Beach, Kenneth City, Largo, Indian Rocks Beach, Treasure Island, Pass-a-Grille Beach, South Pasadena, Madeira Beach, the St. Pete Clearwater Airport and Boyd Hill Nature Preserve. The warning also is in effect for parts of Tampa and Brandon. It extends along Interstate 275 between Exits 6 and 45.
Rainfall will continue tonight and Wednesday.
