Stay Cool This Weekend

Beat the heat with these helpful hydrating tips and some made-in-the-shade outdoor activities.

This weekend’s high temperatures combined with the brutal humidity could make being outdoors almost unbearable. However, you can enjoy all the rays that you wish, if you prepare your body properly.

According to Jennifer Soong, in a piece written for WebMD:

“Water doesn't get the same media attention as green tea, antioxidants, and the latest fad diets. Yet it plays a much more critical part in our daily lives and our bodies.

Our bodies are made up of about 60% water, and every system depends on water. So water is important for healthy skin, hair, and nails, as well as controlling body temperature, heart rate, and blood pressure.”

So, how can you keep yourself hydrated enough for a day on the beach? For one, keep your coolers alcohol free as it is one of the most dehydrating liquids you can ingest. Second, drink water before you take part in outdoor activities. Once you start sweating, your body is already looking to be replenished. You will be playing a constant game of catch-up if you wait until you start an activity to hydrate.

Foods can also be a great source of hydration, before and during outdoor activity. Soong writes that,

“Fruits are an excellent source for water. Watermelon is 90% water, so it ranks highest on the list. Oranges, grapefruit, and melons like cantaloupe and honeydew are also strong contenders.

Vegetables, though not as full of water as fruit, can also provide a nutrient-rich water source. Stick with celery, cucumbers, tomatoes, green peppers, and Romaine lettuce.”

Sodas, even diet, are filled with sugar, which causes dehydration. Stick to water or a sports drink. Even sports drinks and juices can be sugary, so bring along a cup to dilute them with water.

Once you’ve got these hydration tips down, remember to take five every so often. A little shade or midday swim can go a long way. Try one of these beachside options to stay cool:
