Here are the top five stories in Tampa today:

1. Tampa Police Department (TPD) is running an enforcement operation called "The Heat is On" during Labor Day weekend. TPD will have additional officers on patrol each night from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., looking for drivers who are impaired, speeding or not wearing their seatbelts with a focus on Ybor City, downtown, SOHO and areas near beaches. 2. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has issued a response to a lawsuit filed last week by suspended Hillsborough County State Attorney Andrew Warren. The response states, "this case does not warrant federal court intervention in a quintessentially state matter." The case comes as DeSantis seeks re-election as the governor of Florida. (ABC News)

3. Chef Richard Hales' modern Chinese restaurant Blackbrick will soft open in Tampa on Sunday, October 25 at 4812 North Dale Mabry Highway. Blackbrick also has a location in Miami. Reservations are now online and the menu includes hand-made noodles, soup dumplings, wok fried rice, dim sum dumplings and more. (Creative Loafing Tampa)

4. A two-day festival of music, art, wine and food called Blended Festival is coming to Tampa this fall on November 19 and 20. The event will be held at Perry Harvey Park located at 1000 East Harrison Street. Tickets are now online. (That's So Tampa)

5. HCA Florida South Tampa Hospital opened its new 11,000 square foot facility at the southeast corner of Hillsborough Avenue and Interstate 275 this week. The emergency facility will operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It was previously the iconic Seminole Heights Baptist Church. (Subscription: Tampa Bay Times)

  • The Tampa Police Department is looking for a man caught on footage taking a bike off the front porch of a home and walking away. The crime happened at a home on South Willow Avenue and the bike was sitting unsecured. (WTSP)
  • Washington Monthly magazine has highlighted The University of Tampa as a "Best Bang for the Buck" college and as a "Best College for Student Voting." Voting by students at UT increased by 41% between the 2016 and 2020 elections. (Tampa Bay Newswire)
  • D-Gallerie announced its upcoming exhibition Flower + Brigade, a combined exhibition by artists Kelly Moeykens and Abby Elizabeth. It is the first exhibition of both American artists in the Tampa area. The opening reception will take place October 7 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. (Tampa Bay Newswire)
