Cops' Fleet Keeps Gasparilla Flotilla Arrival Safe: Watch

Authorities make sure the Jose Gaspar Pirate Ship gets to the Channelside area during Saturday's Gasparilla Invasion and Pirate Fest

TAMPA, FL - Hillsborough County deputies and the Tampa police are hosting more than 30 state and federal agencies who have banned together to help keep the waters in Tampa Bay safe and make sure the Jose Gaspar Pirate Ship gets to the Channelside area during Saturday's Gasparilla Invasion and Pirate Fest.

The video, produced by the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, shows how law enforcement plans for the flotilla's arrival and the challenges of the law enforcement fleet to keep everyone safe and incident free. This year, more than 80 law enforcement marine vessels will be hitting the water making sure the pirates stay in line and the "Mosquito Fleet" stays safe.

Traditionally, a large civilian armada, nicknamed the "Mosquito Fleet", accompanies the ship as it "attacks" Tampa while throwing beads and firing their cannons. This year an estimated 1,300 privately owned ships and boats will be along side.

Law enforcement will also have on hand a number of helicopters from various agencies who will be staffed with rescue divers available for immediate response for water rescues.
