TAMPA, FL — Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Williams has died at the age of 36 from injuries suffered in a construction accident, according to the NFL.

Williams, who played for the Bucs and the Buffalo Bills from 2010 to 2014, was on life support following a construction accident earlier this month. According to his agent, Hadley Englehard, Williams died on Tuesday. He played college football at Syracuse before being drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

According to Williams' father, Wendell Muhammed, a steel beam fell on Williams' head while he was working at a construction site. He received massive head and spinal cord injuries and was placed on life support.

Muhammed said Williams was rushed to the intensive care unit at a Tampa hospital on Sept. 1 where doctors discovered that Williams' diaphragm was pressing on his lungs, causing fluid buildup, according to Muhammed. Despite treatment that allowed Williams' lungs to clear, he lost consciousness and was placed on life support.

His father set up a GoFundMe campaign to help pay his medical expenses.
