Gas Worx District Breaks Ground On 'Industrial Chic' Townhomes

Tampa Mayor Jane Castor will be on hand Friday for the groundbreaking of the townhome community in the Gas Worx district in Ybor City.

TAMPA, FL — Crews will break ground Friday on the first project in what is expected to be a wave of Ybor City redevelopment sparked by the 50-acre Gas Worx district.

Canvas GWX, a community of townhomes described as “industrial chic,” will be the first major construction project to begin just outside the Gas Worx boundary.

Tampa Mayor Jane Castor will take part in Friday’s ceremony at 10 a.m. at 1218 E. Kay St., Tampa. Also on hand will be Michael Mincberg, principal of Sight Development, and Cory Ellison, president of Ellison Construction.

The pioneering project shows that Gas Worx is already serving as a catalyst for investment in Ybor, sparking more housing and businesses in neighboring areas, even though construction on GasWorx began just six months ago.

Canvas GWX’s townhouse units will be 2,100 to 2,400 square feet, with rooftop terraces and community green space. The industrial style architecture is influenced by the Ybor City warehouses and factories that have been converted into artist studios, lofts and maker’s spaces.
