GET OUT: Weekend Events Preview May 17-19

With a variety of entertainment venues and restaurants in the area, there's no reason to spend the weekend at home. We've put together a list of fun things to do in the South Tampa-Hyde Park area.

It's the weekend and you have no plans. Patch is coming to the rescue. We’ve got the best bets for your done-work-outta-here time. Check our picks for the activities to hit.

A Night of Jazz

Howard W. Blake Magnet High School of the Arts will host “A Night of Jazz” in the Blake Riverside Courtyard on Friday, May 17 at 7 p.m. The New Orleans-themed event will feature jazz played by The Jazz Messengers, Blake’s jazz band, art displays, Cajun food dishes and a special performance by the musical group Distinguished Men of Brass. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets, lawn chairs and towels to enjoy the outdoor Bourbon Street blast.

Harbour Island Art Fest

The Harbour Island Art Walk will take place Sunday, May 19 from noon to 5 p.m. between That's Amore and Cafe DuFrain. The event will feature artists displaying paintings, metal work, jewelry, photographs, art glass, pottery, woodwork along with a kid's art activity area and music.

'Cinderella' on Stage

The ballet, "Cinderella," will be presented Sunday, May 19 at 1 and 6:30 p.m. in Ferguson Hall at the David A. Straz Jr. Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Tampa. The ballet will feature nearly 200 dancers from the Next Generation Ballet.

Disney on Ice

Disney on Ice will present "Rockin' Ever After" with characters from Disney-Pixar Friday, May 17 at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 18 at 11 a.m., 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. and Sunday, May 19 at 1 and 5 p.m. at the Tampa Bay Times Forum.

Outdoor Movie Night

Tate's Pizzeria & Sports Bar, 927 S. Howard Ave., Tampa, hosts an outdoor movie night each Thursday and Friday night on its 12-foot movie screen.

Classic Film Series

The Tampa Theatre, 711 N. Franklin St., Tampa, will present its Classic Film Series each Sunday at 2 p.m. On Sunday, May 19, "ET the Extra-Terrestrial" will be shown. Tickets are $9 for adults and $7 for kids.

Saturday Storytime

Barnes & Noble Booksellers, 213 N. Dale Mabry Highway, Tampa, hosts a weekly story hour for kids Saturdays at 11 a.m.

Downtown Sunday Market

The Tampa Downtown Sunday Market is held each Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the 600 and 700 blocks of Franklin Street. More than 50 vendors sell produce, art, specialty food and crafts.

Ride for the Guide Fundraiser

A Ride for the Guide kick-off fundraiser will take place Saturday, May 18 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Fountain Square on Davis Islands, 238 E. Davis Blvd., Tampa. The event will feature happy hour pricing, live entertainment, appetizers and a raffle. The event kicks off resident Andrew Sufficool's efforts to raise awareness of and funds for Southeastern Guide Dogs by riding his bike 3,400 miles across the country.

Lincoln Day Dinner

U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio will be the keynote speaker at the Hillsborough County Republican Party's 2013 Lincoln Day Dinner Saturday, May 18, at the Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay, 2900 Bayport Rd., Tampa. The theme of this year's dinner is "A Night to Celebrate Freedom." A chairman's reception starts at 6:30 p.m. and the dinner begins at 7:30 p.m.

Learn to Row Workshop

The Tampa Athletic Club will offer a learn to row program for adults Saturday, May 18 and Sunday, May 19 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the McNeel Boathouse at the University of Tampa. The cost is $150.

Author Visit

Author Rick Yancey will discuss his young adult thriller, The 5th Wave, Saturday, May 18 at 2 p.m. at Inkwood Books, 216 S. Armenia Ave., Tampa. Yancey is the author of several adult novels and the memoir Confessions of a Tax Collector. His first young adult novel, The Extraordinary Adventures of Alfred Kropp, was a finalist for the Carnegie Medal. In 2010, his novel, The Monstrumologist, received a Michael L Printz Honor, and the sequel, The Curse of the Wendigo, was a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. This visit by Yancey will kick off Inkwood's new monthly Teen Book Club. Pizza and drinks will be served.

Computer Boot Camp

Find out how to use free, Web-based photograph editing applications to crop, enhance and even repair photos Sunday, May 19 at 1 p.m. at the John F. Germany Public Library, 900 N. Ashley St., Tampa. Mouse and keyboard skills are recommended prerequisites for this program.

Cycling and Social

The Tampa Bay Running Club hosts a cycle and social each Sunday at 4 p.m. starting from Marjorie Park Marina, 97 Columbia Dr., Tampa.
