Here are the top stories in Tampa today:
1. Hundreds attended the memorial service for Polk County Sheriff's Deputy Blane Lane, 21, on Tuesday. Lane was killed by friendly fire while serving a felony warrant with other deputies. Polk Sheriff Grady Judd said the incident was a "surprise attack by a drug-infested, nasty, evil person who pointed a gun directly at their face to make them believe their death was imminent." 2. Two kidnapped children were rescued by a deputy on Monday after a carjacking, according to Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office (HCSO). The deputy was flagged down by the parent of the two children near the area of East 137th Avenue and North 15th Street and alerted about the incident. The accused suspect is facing two counts of felony kidnapping and one count of grand theft of a motor vehicle. (WFLA)
3. Brooklyn-based Mighty Quinn's BBQ is planning to open a franchise location in Tampa at 202 N. Dale Mabry Highway. The location will feature the brand's first drive-thru. The planned opening date for the new outpost is Saturday, Oct. 22. (That's So Tampa)
4. Hillsborough County Public Schools (HCPS) has announced two new measures that aim to help students address mental health. The new measures include an online resource for students and brochures that students can access offline. The district is prioritizing the issue amid record need, with 850 professionals available for student use. (Subscription: Tampa Bay Times)
5. Lucky Tigre is opening this weekend in South Tampa at 1101 S Howard Ave. Ste B. It is Tampa's first sari-sari counter, a type of Filipino convenience store, with numerous food offerings including dumplings, steamed buns, plant-based entrees, and more. - Tampa Police have identified a suspect involved in a fatal shooting at the LIT Cigar and Martini Lounge last weekend on Oct. 9 in downtown Tampa. "An arrest warrant has been obtained for Damaso Bravo, 31, of Wimauma, who is facing three counts of aggravated battery and a charge of felon in possession of a firearm," a news release reads. - The University of Tampa shared: "The University of Tampa welcomes back renowned jazz pianist, composer and accordionist Ben Rosenblum, along with bassist Marty Jaffe and drummer Eric Kennedy, for an encore performance on Monday, Oct. 17.
