Here are the top five stories in Tampa today:
1. A Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office detention deputy, 24-year-old Marvin Vasquez, was arrested after allegedly trying to pay for sex with a minor on Saturday. He is facing charges of human trafficking (commercial sexual activity) and unlawful use of a two-way communications device. (WFLA)
2. Governor Ron DeSantis is pushing veterans as school teachers amid a massive shortage of staff across the state including locally in Hillsborough County. At one point during the pandemic Hillsborough County was short nearly 1,000 positions, according to Superintendent Addison Davis. Florida Education Association President Andrew Spar does not believe the veteran program will solve the problems faced by counties as Florida lags behind the rest of the country in teacher pay. (Tallahassee Patch)
3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Kyle Trask made a strong opening in his preseason debut on Saturday night despite a 26-24 loss to the Miami Dolphins. Trask completed 25 of 33 passes for 258 yards and had one touchdown and one interception. Bucs star Quarterback Tom Brady was on break for the game. (Bleacher Report)
4. Police say a man was found dead in a running vehicle early Sunday morning in Tampa, according to a release. Tampa police say they were called near Lazy River Drive and East Regnas Avenue after a report of a suspicious vehicle was made. An investigation is underway. (WTSP)
5. The Wilson-Wood Foundation recently awarded a $10,000 grant to Safe Children Coalition (SCC), for its HIPPY (Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters) program. The grant will help area families with young children "prepare their children for success in school and beyond." Recipients face overwhelming poverty and the program has served over 200 in need throughout Sarasota County. (Tampa Bay Newswire)
