Hillsborough County Promoting Large Dog Adoptions at Monthly Event
The county's animal shelter will launch a DNA testing pilot program as part of the First Saturday Celebration.

TAMPA, FL – The staff at the Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center like big mutts and they cannot lie.
To prove it, the county’s animal shelter will put large dog breed in the spotlight during its monthly First Saturday Celebration on Saturday, Aug. 6 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The shelter is located at 440 N. Falkenburg Road.
Thanks to a $10,000 Big Dog Adoption grant from the Best Friends Animal Society, Pet Resources is implementing a DNA testing pilot program to increase adoptions of large-sized dogs. Available dogs that are 40 pounds or larger will be DNA tested, and the results will be shared with their adoptive families.
In addition to this month’s free DNA test results on large dogs, the shelter will continue to offer $20 adoptions for all ready-to-go pets, which includes spaying or neutering, vaccinations, microchip with free registration, and a Hillsborough County pet license tag – a package valued at $250 to $400.
The Aug. 6 First Saturday Celebration will also feature:
- Refreshments and music
- Special guests, exhibitors, rescue partners, and foster pets ready for adoption
- Free parking and admission
The Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center is open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. for adoptions, lost pet searches, low-cost spay and neuter vouchers and Hillsborough County pet license tags.
