Man Found Competent To Stand Trial In 2018 Murder Case: Report

The man accused of running down a father of two has been found competent to stand trial nearly two years after the incident.

TAMPA, FL — Mikese Morse has been found competent to stand trial for the 2018 killing of a father of two, according to a report. Pedro Aguerreberry, 42, was riding his bike with his kids on Sunday, June 24, 2018, when Morse ran his car into them, reports say.

Spectrum News 9 reported Morse was found incompetent to stand trial in 2018 due to mental illness, but state officials requested a second opinion over reports that Morse was uncooperative with a state-appointed psychologist.

The report says Morse was visibly angry and incoherent on Instagram posts the day of the crash. One video shows Morse saying "I'm going to kill somebody tonight right now," Spectrum News 9 reported.

In 2018, Tampa police said witnesses saw Morse make a U-turn in his 2008 Dodge Avenger, intentionally speed up and drive off the road onto a bike path, deliberating striking the father and his two sons who were out for a Sunday bike ride. Morse then reportedly fled the scene.

All three victims were transported to a local hospital where Pedro Aguerreberry was later pronounced dead. Bennett Aguerreberry, age 3, was treated for a leg fracture. Lucas, age 7, suffered minor injuries.

During the investigation, Hillsborough County Sheriff deputies located Morse' maroon Dodge Avenger in the Pebble Creek subdivision, about two blocks from the home where Morse' parents live. Plastic was taped to the broken windshield. They confirmed it was the car involved in the hit-and-run based on damage to the front end and windshield. They then arrested Morse at his parents' Pebble Creek home.

A GoFundMe fundraiser yielded over $88,000 for the family.
