Here are the top five stories today in Tampa:

1. Hillsborough County is dedicating the nature center at Lettuce Lake Park in honor of Joel Jackson, a well-known environmental advocate who helped create some of Hillsborough County's most popular parks and nature preserves. It will now be known as Joel E. Jackson Nature Center. Jackson retired in 2009 after after 17 years with the city of Tampa and 23 years with Hillsborough County. (Tampa Patch)

2. Parents are disappointed that a 13-year-old teen at MacDill Air Force Base will not be charged after allegedly exposing himself to two girls under the age of 7. The parents of the girls say the base "found probable cause that he committed this crime but because he's a minor at the age of 13, they can't prosecute." The case has been referred to the U.S. Attorneys Office. (WFLA)

3. Despite efforts by the city of Tampa to help renters during an affordable housing crisis, landlords are not required to accept rental assistance funds. Nearly one out of 10 residents who qualified for rent assistance from the city could not use the funds. Over 2,000 seniors in Tampa are currently waiting for low-income housing programs which can take up to five years. (Subscription: Tampa Bay Times)

4. Northern Trust Corp., a leading provider of wealth management, asset servicing, asset management and banking services, has signed a lease for more than 10,000 square feet on the 9th floor of the new trophy office tower, Thousand & One in Water Street Tampa. Its office is currently on North Florida Avenue in downtown Tampa. (Tampa Patch)

5. City of Tampa Mayor Jane Castor has endorsed Rep. Val Demings for U.S. Senate. Both have previously served as the first female chiefs of police in their own cities. Demings served 27 years with the Orlando Police Department and eventually became police chief. (WTSP)

  • Willa's is hosting a Cocktails for Ukraine fundraising event this Sunday, September 4 at 5 p.m. All donations will benefit Kostiantyn Matsipura, a Ukrainian citizen who is bringing food from his restaurant in the city of Ternopil to hospitals, schools, and anyone in need. (Tampa Bay Newswire)
  • Tampa Electric will invest $5 million in the University of South Florida to fund research, education and innovation that aims to reduce carbon and improve the environment. "This partnership is a key pillar in our vision to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050," said Archie Collins, president and chief executive officer of Tampa Electric. (USF News)
  • The Tampa Bay Buccaneers added 14 players to their practice squad after trimming down their active roster from 80 players to 53. (BucsWire)
  • St. Pete Art & Fashion Week kicks off on Thursday, September 8 with its annual Opening Night Soiree. The event was founded by Dona Crowley, a Tampa Bay resident and owner of Luxe Fashion Group. (Tampa Bay Newswire)
