ICYMI Restaurant Inspections: Rodent Feces On Dishwasher, 30 Roaches

A few restaurants in the Tampa Bay area were temporarily closed by the state last week when conditions inside didn't meet standards.

The Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation ordered emergency closures at two Tampa Bay area eateries last week when conditions inside didn’t meet state guidelines for health and safety.

Roach activity, dirty conditions and rodent droppings were among the biggest reasons behind the temporary closings. In its Emergency Closures report for the week ending July 1, the state noted these local restaurants had been ordered shut until they cleaned up their acts:

Tampa

The inspector noted a few minor concerns inside this establishment, including a dirty kitchen floor and issues related to potentially hazardous food storage conditions. Information found lacking in employee training records also raised an eyebrow, the state’s report noted. The biggest red flags, however, involved the discovery of a few live flies in the kitchen and more than a few live roaches. The inspector noted finding 10 roaches under a plastic bag and 30 more under a box. About eight more roaches were found crawling under the reach-in freezer, the state’s report said. The state’s inspector returned on June 27, but the establishment did not meet standards. It did so later that day during a second inspection.

The state’s inspector noted a number of minor concerns, including a hole in the bathroom wall, dirty cooler gaskets and uncovered food stored in the walk-in cooler. The discovery of dented cans, raw animal foods not properly separated from each other and an employee’s failure to change gloves also caused concerns. The biggest red flag was raised when the inspector found rodent droppings inside the establishment. The report noted 35 rodent droppings were found on the dish machine, 11 more on top of the sanitizer, 19 on top of a soap bucket, 12 near the cook line and more in other areas of the establishment, including the women’s bathroom. The eatery met state standards during a return inspection on June 30.
