FOX 13 meteorologist Nash Rhodes says a heat dome — a ridge of high pressure — and lack of rain allowed for the high temperatures on Sunday.
The airport, where Tampa’s official weather data is recorded, sits just off Tampa Bay.
“The sea breeze is usually able to move in and cool things down before temps can quite get that hot. A combo of multiple hot, dry days and a strong NE wind kept that from happening today, breaking the record,” NWS said.
The weather service issued a heat advisory about noon Sunday as temperatures climbed into the 90s.
By 2 p.m., the feels-like temperature reached 114 degrees, accounting for humidity, the Tampa Bay Times reported.
A heat advisory with temperatures in the upper 90s and heat indexes from 106 to 112 degrees continue Monday in west-central Florida, the NWS said.
