Two Florida Officers Tied to KKK, State Says

Two officers in the Fruitland Park Police Department northwest of Orlando are accused of being connected to the Ku Klux Klan.

They were named in an report from Florida Department of Law Enforcement making the connection.

Fruitland Park City Manager Gary Le Venia told Patch that last week Deputy Chief David Borst resigned “of his own volition” and that the department fired Officer George Hunnewell.

The FDLE report alleges Hunnewell and ex-wife Anne Hunnewell, a police department secretary, were members of the KKK and recruited Borst to join the organization.

Le Venia says the FDLE documents was contained in information regarding a bigger FBI investigation.

Fruitland Park Police Chief Terry Isaacs told Orlando’s WFTV that he was “very upset.”

“We do have one policy that states ‘we will not be a member of or associate with subversive organizations,’” Isaacs said.

Hunnewell was demoted from this position as corporal in 2013 for problems including conduct and performance, News 13 reports.

According to News 13, the case file history of both officers will be turned over to the Lake County State Attorney’s Office for review.
