Apparent Murder-Suicide Under Investigation in St. Pete

St. Petersburg Police say a 19-year-old found her grandmother and great-grandmother dead Sunday morning.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL — The St. Petersburg Police Department is investigating the Sunday morning shooting deaths of a woman and her elderly mother.

According to the agency, a 19-year-old girl returned to her home in the 5500 block of 17th Way South to find her grandmother and great-grandmother dead from gunshot wounds. The girl made the discovery after returning from the store around 11:30 am. Nov. 6.

Police say the girl’s grandmother is believed to have shot her elderly mother and then herself in an apparent murder-suicide while the granddaughter was out. There is no evidence of anyone else being in the apartment at the time, police noted in an email to media.

The case remains under investigation, but police have released the identities of the women. The grandmother has been identified as Elizabeth Mitchell, 69. Mitchell’s mother is Curley Williams, 90.

Police say Mitchell and Williams lived in apartment with the 19-year-old granddaughter who found them.
