Toy Grenade Prompted St. Petersburg Scare

The Tampa Bomb Squad was called to St. Petersburg after the Friday morning discovery of a possible grenade.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL — The St. Petersburg Police Department has given an all-clear following a Friday morning scare about a possible grenade found on a stretch of private beach.

According to the agency, a woman called police Friday morning after her 3-year-old son found what appeared to be a grenade. The discovery was made on the beach area behind a vacant home in the 2800 block of Pelham Road North.

“It is partially buried in sand below the sea wall,” police wrote in an email to media.

It seems after the "grenade" was dug out from the sand, it became clear there was nothing to fear.

"Grenade turned out to be a toy," St. Petersburg Police wrote on their Twitter feed shortly before 1 p.m. Dec. 3. "Better safe than sorry."

The Tampa Bomb Squad had been called out to investigate the possible explosive. It is unclear if the team made it there before the item was determined to be a toy.
