Coast Guard Completes Cleanup at Sponge Docks

On Thursday, the U.S. Coast Guard announced some good news about the condition of an area that was affected by a boat fire on May 14.

The Coast Guard and the Department of Environmental Protection finished the pollution cleanup Wednesday, May 22 from a boat that caught fire near the sponge docks.

During the eight-day clean-up process, SWS Environmental Services collected approximately four tons of soiled debris and 6,213 gallons of water, diesel mix from the area surrounding the vessel Skye Marie.

Sector St. Petersburg's Aids to Navigation Team tagged the vessel with a lit red buoy to mark the vessel as a hazard to navigation.

The Coast Guard continues to send out a Safety Marine Information Broadcast informing mariners to take caution when transiting the area.

No affected wildlife have been reported.

Contractors and all cleanup equipment have been removed from the scene and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
