Details Emerge For Tarpon Springs Peace Flag Project

During Tuesday night's City Commission meeting, Tarpon Springs Mayor, David O. Archie announced that April 5-8 would officially be known as Peace Flag Project Week.

"It's an opportunity for everybody to really take a part in participating and showing that Tarpon, as a whole, promotes peace," Mayor Archie said.

Dubbed a public arts event, the Peace Flag Project will be held in an effort to promote social change and build partnerships within the community.
With hopes of displaying 10,000 peace flags by the end of the project, the mission was stated as follows:

"These peace flags offer a visual message about the Peace for Tarpon goals and also create the opportunity for an ecumenical, cross cultural, inclusive partnership among the churches, schools, agencies, businesses and healthcare providers in Tarpon Springs."

At Tuesday's Board of Commissioners meeting, art therapist and Peace4Tarpon partner, Kathleen Sullivan accepted the proclamation from Mayor Archie.

"We can, through making and displaying these flags, send out our intention of peace," Sullivan said.

Residents, students and families are encouraged to take part in the project by decorating a peace flag at the Tarpon Sunday Market, any Sunday from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.
