5 Frugal Outings for Tarpon Springs Residents

We've compiled a list of ideas for family fun that will give your wallet a break while keeping your need for extracurricular activities satisfied.

Regardless of your taste in recreation, we hope one of these frugal, spring outings will spur some family fun:

1) Picnics in the Park

Parks like Fred Howard are free outings that everyone can enjoy. Between the playgrounds and hiking trails, there are enough activities for kids of all ages. Utilize the picnic tables and bring sandwiches and drinks from home to complete the experience.

2) A Stroll on the Sponge Docks

Take a walk through history at the Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks. Unless you decide to dine and shop, the only cost is the parking which ranges from $2-$3.

3) Enjoy Mother Nature's Tropical Appeal

Take a day trip to Sunset Beach (located on Gulf Road) and set up an umbrella and your towel for some fun in the sun. Soak up your weekly dose of vitamin D and don't forget your mp3 player for some reggae tunes to match the scene. Pack a lunch and enjoy the view.

4) Create a Photo Scavenger Hunt

Before you head out on the adventure, jot down a list of objects or ideas at home. Purchase a disposable camera at an area convenient store (usually under $10) and start snapping away. The cost to develop the film shouldn't break the bank and you'll be amazed at how creative things can get.

5) Go Under the Sea at the Tarpon Springs Aquarium

Open seven days a week and offering live shark feedings and observation pools, the aquarium has been a stable on the sponge docks for years. Admission is $7.75 for adults, $7 for seniors and $5.75 for children, ages 3-13.
