Please meet our TSPD Chief Young

Special note: Rest in Peace Officer Wood. He was such a great Officer. This article was ready yesterday but I waited a day out of respect.

Police Chief Jeffrey Young has been with Tarpon Springs Police Department since 11/23/1993. This is over 31 years of service to Tarpon Springs! Thank you for your service! Chief Young has been with the TSPD the longest of any Police Officer. Chief Young has done it all. Some of those thing include, but are not limited to, the scuba unit, Detective, traffic safety, education, press releases, The Honor Guard, Patrol Officer and of course he's been a great Police Chief! Chief Young has brought the number of women up in the TSPD to a much fuller level.

Chief Young and Officer Trill were nominated as co-candidates for Officer of the Year in 1996. They low scrawled into and inside of a home located on Lincoln Avenue during a fire. They rescued four juveniles. The Officers entered the home a total a four times to rescue the juveniles, clear the house and finally extinguish the bulk of the flames. All of this happened before TSFR arrived. Many Officers at the TSPD recognized them for this act of courage. Chief Young received a letter of Commendation from TSPD for this act of courage. (Alympia: This is a very hazardous situation. One gulp of smoke can kill a person. Thank you for your service!)

TSPD's Captain Kevin Bowman wrote a letter of appreciation (Alympia: I try to use the word appreciation in place of commendation because appreciation sounds happier.) for Chief Young saving the life of a woman attending a funeral at the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church. Cpt. Bowman forwarded the letter to the Police Department's Awards Review Committee. The woman collapsed. Chief Young arrived before the Tarpon Springs Fire Rescue. TSFR had a three minute response time. Chief Young determine the woman was in cardiac arrest and moved her from the pew to a location the TSFR could function with. The woman was moved to the foyer. Chief Young then performed CPR on her until TSFR took over. Office Gary Lush arrived and kept the crowd from gathering too close so they could help her. The woman was transported to the Emergency Room and was chatting with friends within fifteen minutes.

Kim and Carie Hurey thanked Chief Young in a handwritten letter for doing such a good thing. Kim and Carie said this could have been a very serious incident without the help of Chief Young. Kim and Carie then said in the letter that this issue was over some sort of misunderstanding. (Alympia: I am guessing this letter came from a resident who was genuinely scared of some sort of matter possibly at her home. I am glad Chief Young came to their rescue.)

GoTelecom Managing Director Marissa Costidis spoke very highly of Chief Young in her letter after the 38 crew members with 11 cameras for NBC finished their news story. She said Chief Young provided a great experience beginning with their initial scout a few weeks before the event until their very last shot. NBC was in Tarpon Springs for an NBC Christmas Special in December of 2001. She says he was great with the contacts they needed throughout the City Departments and provided the safety & security she needed for the NBC employees & herself. Chief Young even provided them off-duty Officers 24/7. TSPD's Police (former) Chief Mark G. LeCouris was happy that NBC was so satisfied with Chief Young. Sgt. Trill from TSPD wrote a great letter recognizing Chief Young's work on the January 6th 2002 Epiphany Celebration. (Alympia: Very nice job Chief Young! I am working on obtaining the video from NBC of this event.)

TSPD's Sgt. Trill thanked Chief Young for his work after an arrest. The arrest was of a violent suspect who had committed violent crimes and ended in a very dangerous violent arrest. Chief Young acted as the Public Information Officer. Chief Young's main concern was the well-being of the Officer on scene. Chief Young also provided encouraging words to the Officers. The leader of 250 million Orthodox Christians came to Tarpon Springs in 2006. Bartholomew I of Constantinople has been the elected Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople since 1991. Hundreds of people dressed in religious costumes were at the airport waiting for his plane to land. Bartholomew visited for the 100th annual Epiphany celebration. 100,000 people came to event in Tarpon Springs. Tarpon Springs Police Chief Jeffrey Young was recognized for managing the safety and security of His All Holiness Bartholomew from January 4th 2006 when his plane laned at the local airport through January 8th 2006 when his plane took off to return home. William Planes from St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Tarpon Springs gave special thanks to Chief Young for providing protection & security for His All Holiness Bartholomew, Archbiship of Constantinople during his visit to Tarpon Springs. His All Holiness was truly pleased and impressed with his level of security provided. This was the largest crowd of people in Tarpon Springs history. Chief Young was in charge of safety & security for His All Holiness Bartholomew. Chief Young also coordinated the safety & security for the entire event. Chief Young was highly praised by His All Holiness, St. Nicholas Church, The City of Tarpon Springs, his superiors & other members of the TSPD for his management of the safety & security of the gathering. Chief Young was promoted from Sergeant to Captain two months after this. (Alympia: This is amazing! I have a request in with the World Headquarters to see if they made of video of the visit.)

Pasco Sheriff's Office Sergeant Mike Jones sent a letter of appreciation to 16 TSPD Officers who locked down an area of Tarpon Springs and located a violent fugitive. Chief Young was one of the TSPD Officers who set a perimeter and made the apprehension.
