What is Citizen Corps?

A FEMA organization that was incorporated following the tragic events that occurred on September 11, 2001, state and local government officials increased opportunities for citizens to become an integral part of protecting the homeland and supporting the local first responders.

In January 2002, the President of the United States launched Citizen Corps, to capture the spirit of service that emerged throughout our communities following the terrorist attacks.

Their mission is to harness the power of every individual through education and outreach, training, and volunteer services. Also to help coordinate volunteer activities within the communities.

The programs goal is to "coordinate volunteer activities" that will make our communities safer, stronger, and better prepared to respond to the threats of terrorism, crime, hazards, public health issues, emergencies, and natural disasters that may occur.

Through Citizen Corps, and community volunteering, individuals can learn about opportunities to get involved and help build capacity for first responders. With proper training and education, civilian volunteers expand the resources available to states and local communities. Many partner organizations offer public education, outreach and training.
