City Still Needs Patrol Volunteers

The Citizen Volunteer Patrol Program is open to local residents.

The City of Temple Terrace began taking applications for its Citizen Volunteer Patrol Program in August, and it’s still looking for volunteers.

According to the Tampa Bay Times, four people have shown an interest in the program, but no one has signed up yet. The story also contrasts Temple Terrace’s future patrol to a neighborhood watch program in Sanford that allowed members to carry guns, leading a watch coordinator to fatally shoot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in February.

Temple Terrace Patch first reported on the local on Aug. 17, 2011. At that time, Police Chief Kenneth Albano said 12 volunteers would be chosen. They would go through 40 hours of training and be required to commit to volunteering 14 hours per month.

β€œThey’re just additional eyes and earsβ€”crime prevention on wheels,” Albano explained to the City Council.

Those interested can obtain an application from the Temple Terrace website. An application is also posted with this story.
