Police Invite Residents Behind the Scenes

Ever wonder what kind of training police officers go through before they hit the streets?

Now you can find out for yourself.

On April 14, the  will offer its annual Citizens’ Police Academy, a free program that has provided Temple Terrace residents 18 and older with a peak into the lives of police officers for more than 15 years.

“It gives citizens an opportunity to learn about the role of law enforcement in the community and interact with Temple Terrace police officers,” said Officer Karen Walter, who organizes the program.

Participants will learn about traffic enforcement, 9-1-1 dispatch, narcotics identification, marine law and crime-scene processing. They’ll see K-9, Taser and firearms simulation demonstrations, and learn about the department’s emergency tactical operations. They’ll also discover how residents play a vital role in keeping Temple Terrace safe.

Walter said the most popular aspect of the program is the simulated firearms training. Her favorite part is the interaction with community residents.

Those who complete the program will receive a diploma, class photo and T-shirt. A catered lunch will be served.

The Citizens’ Police Academy will run from 8:15 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the .
