Recognized worldwide for his research onΒ theΒ importanceΒ ofΒ primary care for all patients, Roetzheim serves as professorΒ ofΒ FamilyΒ Medicine and directorΒ ofΒ Research forΒ theΒ  DepartmentΒ of Family Medicine. He is also medical directorΒ ofΒ theΒ Β Lifetime Cancer Screening CenterΒ and a senior memberΒ ofΒ theΒ Health OutcomesΒ and Behavior Department atΒ H. LeeΒ Moffitt Cancer CenterΒ andΒ ResearchΒ InstituteΒ in Tampa.Β In addition, Roetzheim has a primary care practice at USF.

β€œIn over 25 yearsΒ ofΒ practice, I have never known a moreΒ outstanding and β€˜complete’ familyΒ physician,” saidΒ Daniel J. Van Durme, MD, FAAFP, professor and chairman forΒ theΒ DepartmentΒ ofΒ Family Medicine and Rural Health, and directorΒ ofΒ theΒ Center onΒ Global Health forΒ theΒ Florida StateΒ University CollegeΒ ofΒ Medicine. β€œHe combinesΒ theΒ compassion and clinicalΒ skillsΒ ofΒ theΒ best clinicians, combining care with caring, and atΒ theΒ same timeΒ is a truly giftedΒ teacher to any student, resident or peer with whom heΒ interacts. Roetzheim, who joined USF’s DepartmentΒ ofΒ Family Medicine inΒ 1985, also serves as co-directorΒ of theΒ CenterΒ for Equal Health, a program based on a $6 millionΒ National InstitutesΒ ofΒ HealthΒ (NIH)Β grant earned in 2009 to create aΒ National Institute on Minority Health andΒ Health Disparities (NIMHD)Β CenterΒ of Excellence.Β TheΒ five-yearΒ grant focuses on research,Β educationΒ and training, and community outreach to reduce cancer-related healthΒ disparitiesΒ among minority and underserved communities in Florida.

TheΒ USF DepartmentΒ ofΒ Family Medicine is ranked withinΒ theΒ top 20 percentΒ ofΒ FamilyΒ Medicine Departments nationally based on funding received fromΒ theΒ NIH due toΒ vigorousΒ research efforts led by Roetzheim, said H. James Brownlee, MD,Β professor and chairmanΒ ofΒ USF’s DepartmentΒ ofΒ Family Medicine, who nominated Roetzheim forΒ theΒ award.

AlongΒ with his major focus on research, Roetzheim has a strong commitment toΒ theΒ underserved and regularly volunteers at medical clinics serving uninsuredΒ patients, includingΒ theΒ BRIDGE clinic (a student run free clinic at USF) andΒ theΒ Catholic Charities Medical Clinic inΒ Dover. He takes part in annualΒ medical mission trips toΒ the Dominican Republic andΒ recently returned fromΒ Dilaire, Haiti where he and other USF faculty treated about 1,700 people.

β€œEveryΒ yearΒ withΒ theΒ studentΒ charity, Project World Health, we see thousandsΒ ofΒ patients andΒ make a bigΒ difference,” Roetzheim said. β€œThat’s been inspirational as well. It reminds meΒ ofΒ why I became aΒ doctor. In Dilaire, oneΒ ofΒ our motivations is to create something that’sΒ sustainable inΒ theΒ community and withΒ theΒ helpΒ ofΒ theΒ Catholic Diocese, we’reΒ trying to establish a clinic so thatΒ we can keep coming back on a more regularΒ basis to help those in need.”

When asked whichΒ ofΒ his roles he enjoys mostβ€”teacher,Β humanitarian, clinician, or researcherβ€”Roetzheim said, β€œI wear many hats,Β and I enjoy that variety very much. In truth,Β theΒ role IΒ cherish most is beingΒ a family physician. It’s rewarding to work with patients over time and seeΒ themΒ improve. Research has also been a major theme for me. I am especiallyΒ interested inΒ theΒ roleΒ ofΒ primary care in our country and its impact on healthΒ disparities. OneΒ ofΒ theΒ things thatΒ we’ve found that’s critically important isΒ health insurance. Good healthcare depends on findingΒ a way to provide healthΒ insurance to everyone inΒ theΒ country.”

The FAFP is Florida’s medical specialty associationΒ with moreΒ than 4,000 family medicine physicians, resident physicians and medical studentsΒ from acrossΒ theΒ state.Β TheΒ FAFP works to advanceΒ theΒ specialtyΒ ofΒ familyΒ medicine byΒ promoting excellence and improvement in healthcareΒ o fallΒ Floridians.
