Speed Bumps In West Park Village? Not On County Dime

We recently asked our readers to tell us what they'd change about Westchase in 2013. We received several answers on the website and on the Westchase Facebook Page.

For the next few weeks, we plan to look into some of those suggestions to see if they're possible or not.

This week we are addressing a change that reader Mell Ryan Comperatore would like to see. Comperatore wrote: "Speed bumps in WPV (West Park Village) are very needed!"

Here's what Hillsborough County spokesman Steve Valdez had to say about it:

"Hillsborough County does not have a funded residential traffic control program any longer," Valdez said.

That being said, Hillsborough County will entertain communities that request traffic controls and are willing to pay for it, Valdez added.

The process would work like this: An engineer would be hired by the county to go out and do a speed study to determine the volume and speed of traffic in the community. If speed humps or other traffic control devices are warranted the work could be done. However, the community would be responsible for the engineer and the cost of the speed control devices and installation.

"It is a program that not many communities have used," Valdez said. "The cost for the entire project would vary on the size of the community, length of the road way and number of traffic control devices needed."
