Here are the top five stories today in Cumming:
- The Forsyth County Sheriffβs Office has arrested a man in connection with the death of a local teen who overdosed in 2021. Kai Hudson Bakarich, 19, has been charged with murder for selling 18-year-old Kaylee Boxer the drugs which ultimately led to her death last year. Bakarich is currently being held at the Forsyth County Jail without bond. (Subscription: Forsyth County News)
- Cumming was one of several cities to sign individual contracts on Monday guaranteeing access to water from Lake Lanier. The lake has been a point of contention in recent years, as both Alabama and Florida have objected to metro Atlanta utilities tapping into the reservoir. Buford and Gainesville were among the other cities to sign individual contracts this week. (WABE 90.1 FM)
- A local musician was named a runner-up in the 2022 Unsigned Only Music Competition, an international music challenge for artists who are not signed to a major record label. Skyler Day of Cumming competed among almost 7,000 artists to earn the recognition for the song, "The Best Worst Thing." This year's grand prize was awarded to Tia P. of Inglewood, CA, who performed, "That Action." (Benzinga)
- The Driveway Company, a concrete repair and maintenance service provider, has announced its grand opening in Cumming. The company provides a variety of repair and decorative concrete services, including patios, pool decks, porches, warehouses, and sports facilities. According to a spokesperson from The Driveway Company, the brand hopes its services will help members of the "up-and-Cumming" community enhance curb appeal of their homes and commercial spaces. - The Atlanta metro area has been named one of the country's fastest-growing metropolitan statistical areas, thanks in part to the development of the Cumming City Center. The 75-acre development between Canton Highway and Sawnee Drive is expected to be fully open to the public by spring of next year. The Stone Mountain Village neighborhood and Five Points MARTA station upgrades were also cited as causes for Atlanta's recent suburban growth. (The Philly Caller)

The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office shared an important reminder: Drivers traveling in the lane adjacent to the shoulder must move over one lane when emergency and utility vehicles are stopped on the side of the road.
