Cumming Murder Suspect Extradited From Mexico
A man was returned to Cumming from Hidalgo, Mexico, Tuesday, to stand trial for charges against him stemming from a 2010 murder case.

CUMMING, GA – Jorge Montiel, 32 of Mexico, was returned to Cumming from Hidalgo, Mexico Tuesday, to stand trial for charges against him stemming from a 2010 murder case. Agents of the FBI Gainesville Office took Montiel into custody in Mexico and escorted him back to Georgia. The GBI and Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office took custody of Montiel at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport for transport to the Forsyth County Detention Center.
On October 13, 2010, Maria Hernandez-Reyes was found deceased in her Park Street home in Cumming. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested by the Cumming Police Department to assist in the investigation. Investigators with the GBI, Cumming Police Department and the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office worked together to investigate this case. As a result of the investigation, arrest warrants were taken for Jorge Montiel, for burglary, aggravated sodomy and murder. Montiel returned to Mexico before the warrants could be executed. Because Montiel returned to Mexico, the Bell-Forsyth Judicial Circuit District Attorney authorized international extradition for Montiel. The Gainesville FBI Office obtained a Federal warrant for Montiel.
While efforts were being made to locate Montiel, he was indicted by a Forsyth County Grand Jury for murder, felony murder, burglary, aggravated sexual battery and aggravated sodomy.
