Forsyth County Schools Wants Redistricting Feedback

School attendance zones will be adjusted in the 2016-17 academic year to stem overcrowding and populate 2 new schools.

Forsyth County Schools is looking to receive feedback on its plans to adjust the county’s school district boundaries to help reduce overcrowding and flesh out the enrollment of two new facilities.

The school system has begun its redistricting process, which looks to shift some population away from schools like Big Creek Elementary, Dawes Elementary, Mashburn Elementary, Vickery Creek Middle, and Piney Grove Middle School. Students removed from these schools will be transferred to either the new Brandywine Elementary School or the new DeSana Middle School, both of which are set to open in August 2016.

Subdivisions that will be impacted by the proposed redistricting and the currently proposed redistricting maps for middle and elementary schools can be viewed in full at the bottom of this article. Community members with comments or concerns about the process are invited to submit their feedback by Sept. 21 through this form.

Public hearings on the plan will be held in late October, with the Forsyth County Board of Education expected to finalize the new school attendance boundaries at its Nov. 19 meeting.

High school students are safe from redistricting for now, but there will be a shakeup in high school attendance zones in fall of 2017 in anticipation of the 2018 opening of Denmark High School.

Rising 5th and 8th grade students who end up being reassigned to Brandywine or DeSana can fill out a request to complete their final year at their old school, but their parents will be responsible for transporting them to and from school.
