A barred owl stuck in barbed wire has a Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office captain to thank for his freedom and a second chance on life in the wild.

Capt. Chuck Smith was riding his bike with his wife on the Big Creek Greenway when the pair came across the unfortunate owl. Captain Smith was able to free the bird from the barbs, but realized that the owl was too injured to fly away. Smith and his wife took the bird to the North Precinct, where Animal Control officers took responsibility for the owl.

Animal Control deputies brought the owl to the Chattahoochee Nature Preserve, where he will spend the next three or four months recovering and rehabilitating from his injuries. After he’s fully recovered, he will be released back into the wild near where he was initially found.
