- Georgia House Speaker Jon Burns has announced plans to improve mental health care with a new bill and multiple studies to set the groundwork for future action. The bill includes expanding the student loan forgiveness program for mental health care providers, creating new crisis stabilization units, and mandating more data sharing among agencies. However, sponsors of the measure acknowledged that more funding will be needed to increase Medicaid payments for care providers and address the distribution of treatment beds in the state; Rep. Todd Jones (R-Cumming) noted that Georgia residents have reached out to say they can't find treatment facilities for their loved ones. (WABE 90.1 FM)
- Forsyth County Parks and Recreation is organizing its inaugural Rec & Run event at Chattahoochee Pointe Park in nearby Suwanee. The event, scheduled for Mar. 18, will feature a 5K and fun run. Proceeds will be donated to the Forsyth County Parks and Recreation scholarship fund, providing recreational opportunities for all county residents. - The Humane Society of Forsyth County (HSFC) expressed gratitude to the patrons and staff of NoFo Brew Co. in Cumming for raising approximately $1,000 through the HSFC's "round up" campaign in December. The funds will be used to support the animals at the shelter. - You can give back by giving blood. The Cumming Library will be hosting an American Red Cross Blood Drive next Friday, Mar. 3. - Heads up, house hunters: five new homes have hit the Cumming real estate market.
