Here are the top five stories today in Cumming:
- Georgia State Patrol Post 37 Troopers in Cumming assisted with a wreck in Lumpkin County where a driver crashed into a patrol vehicle. An erratic driver was spotted by a White County Sheriff's deputy on Monday night on Highway 115. The driver fled when the deputy attempted to make a stop which resulted in a pursuit where the driver backed into one patrol vehicle, then drove off and reached a high speed, eventually crashing into another patrol vehicle. After an on-foot pursuit, 54-year-old Jody Shea was apprehended. (Now Habersham)
- In nearby Sugar Hill, a standoff resulted in a man dying by suicide on Tuesday. The hours-long standoff between the Gwinnett SWAT team and the man suspected of kidnapping a 10-year-old girl took place at a home in the 1200 block of Sycamore Summit. Officials say the man refused to come out and shot at police around 4:00 a.m. Police later found him dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound around 9:45 a.m. when they entered the residence. - Forsyth County Schools has announced the principals for the 2023-2024 school year. Amber Lamb, the current assistant principal of Silver City Elementary School, will be the incoming principal for Settles Bridge Elementary. Current Assistant Principal Dawn Hudson of North Forsyth Middle School will be the principal of Liberty Middle School. Forsyth Central High School's current assistant principal, Carrie MacAllaster, will be the principal of Riverwatch Middle School. Additionally, Todd McClelland will be the director of food and nutrition at North Forsyth Middle School where he currently serves as principal. (Forsyth County Schools via Facebook)
- April Addison, 32, was diagnosed with breast cancer during her pregnancy with her son last year. The oncology nurse in suburban Atlanta thought it was impossible and wondered how she could have gotten cancer with her healthy and active lifestyle β and young age. Addison was treated in Cumming at Northside Hospital Forsyth and is now urging people of all ages to get screened for cancer. She said, "If you feel something, say something." (TODAY)
