Here are the top five stories in Cumming today:
- A former city councilman was struck by a vehicle at a recycling center over the weekend. According to Cumming Police Chief David Marsh, former Cumming City Councilman Rupert Sexton was injured in the crash on Saturday. He was struck by another driver while standing outside of his vehicle at the Tolbert Street convenience center. Sexton served on the council from 1971 to 2015 and currently sits on the Cumming County Fair & Festival Advisory Board. There is no further information at this time. (Forsyth County News Online)
- The State of Georgia continues to be split about the COVID-19 vaccine. The CDC recently added the COVID-19 vaccination to its list of recommended routine vaccinations for adults and children under 18. However, the Georgia Senate voted 31-21 against the vaccine recommendation, making the bill prohibiting the addition of this vaccine in Georgia permanent. (11Alive.com WXIA)
- If you love burgers, you're in luck this Valentine's Day. A new Hopdody Burger Bar location is set to open in Cumming on Feb. 14. In honor of the grand opening, the chain will give away free burgers to the first 100 people in line at any Atlanta-area location at 11:00 a.m. By sharing a post or a story on Instagram about the visit, guests will also be entered to win free burgers for a year! - This year's Cumming City Center spring pop-up market will be hosted by the mother-daughter fashion brand, Pieces & Peaches. The event will take place at the Cumming City Center on Canton Road on Apr. 22 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The market is free, but there will be vendors selling decorations, clothing jewelry, and more. - Forsyth County announced the Teacher of the Year finalists on Friday! Teacher of the Year candidates came from seven schools across the district. The finalists were surprised by Superintendent Jeff Bearden on Friday by visiting the seven finalists in class to present them with congratulatory gifts. - On Friday, Feb. 10, a sewer spill occurred when a City of Cumming contractor hit a sewer force main while installing a 12-inch water main. The spill occurred near Settingdown Creek, south of Matt Highway. It is estimated that approximately 4,000 gallons of sewage spilled into Settingdown Creek. The ground impacted by the spill has been cleaned up and Forsyth County is taking all necessary precautions and complying with EPD guidelines. (Forsyth County Georgia Government via Facebook)
- Over the weekend, the Forsyth County YMCA announced a sudden pool closure on its Facebook page. As of Sunday, the pool has officially been repaired and is now open. The YMCA staff thank everyone for their patience. (Forsyth County Family YMCA via Facebook)
- Registration is underway for the Spring Cornhole League at Vickery Village Forsyth. Join in on the fun! The league beings on Mar. 23 and will last for seven Thursdays throughout the Spring. (Cumming Local via Facebook)
