Who's Qualified for the 2013 Election in Cumming?

Mayor and two council seats are up for grabs in the Nov. 5 general election.

CummingΒ Mayor H. Ford Gravitt, 71, may very well lead the city into the next four years, the end ofΒ which would mark hisΒ 50 years in public office.

The only one thus farΒ to qualify to run for theΒ mayor's seatΒ in the Nov. 5 general election, according to City Clerk and Elections Superintendent Jeff Homea,Β Gravitt was a city councilman before taking the city's top spot in 1971. He's now in his 42nd year as Cumming mayor.

But Gravitt may haveΒ a few more years before he's America's longest-serving mayor. FormerΒ Brooklyn, Ohio, Mayor John Coyne held a topΒ seat for 52 years, according to the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

Incumbents have beenΒ the only to qualify for two Cumming City CouncilΒ seats up for grabs in November.Β Current CouncilmenΒ Rupert Sexton, 75,Β who representsΒ Post 1, andΒ Quincy Holton, 77,Β ofΒ Post 2, also have officially signed up as candidates, Homea said.Β

Qualifying ends Friday at 4:30 p.m.
