5 Things to Know Today: Aug. 27, 2012
Take a class on fall vegetable gardening or join a Monday evening bike ride.

Good morning, Decatur and Avondale Estates. Here are 5 Things to know about today.
1.Β . Stephanie Van Parys, executive director of the Oakhurst Community Garden Project, will teach this class designed for first time gardeners or those who are transitioning to organic methods of vegetable gardening. It's free and starts at 11:30 a.m. at the Decatur Library.
2. Monday bike ride. Join the 20-mile "Shaking the Blues Cruise" bike ride starting at 6:30 p.m. at Bicycle South at 2098 North Decatur Road in Decatur. The ride goes through sections of Decatur, Emory, Atlanta, Kirkwood and Avondale Estates. Free and helmets required. 3. Cheapest gas. Prices have gone up. Late Sunday, the cheapest gas in the Decatur and Avondale Estates area was $3.56 at RaceTrac at 3858 Covington Highway and QuikTrip at 4113 Covington Highway. A few days ago it was 20 cents cheaper.
4. Weather. Mostly sunny. High temps around 90, lows around 70, 20 percent chance of rain.

5. On this date. In 1881 and 1893, deadly hurricanes hit the coast of Georgia. The 1881 storm killed an estimated 700 people in Georgia, the second storm 2,000 in Georgia and South Carolina.
