A Brush with Lanes: Colorful Mural Graces Doorway to Decatur

Artwork at the Marta overpass isn't done yet, but commuters can see the progress.

DECATUR, GA -- Your commutes into and out of the city are a bit more colorful these days, thanks to the new mural going up in a major corridor into Decatur.

While the artwork isn't done yet, part of it can be seen at the Marta overpass near West Trinity Place and Atlanta Avenue. Judging from the early results, it's going to be pretty awesome.

The bridge artwork was commissioned by Decatur last year as part of a $15,000 grant that the city agreed to match. New Orleans and Miami-based artists Felici Asteinza and Joey Filastre of the Milagros Collective were selected earlier this year to paint the project.

Work began on the piece in November, but has been delayed by inclement weather and some bureaucratic wrangling. The duo reportedly plan on resuming work on the mural in April, when things warm up a bit and the paint can stick better.

Nonprofit group Kaboom Play Everywhere has designated the space under the bridge as a JUMP (Join Us at the Marta Play-space) site, meaning that it will be used as an innovative entertainment area for children.

The goal of the organization is to create a "destination for play and interaction" for kids at downtown Decatur's gateway, according to a story on the group's website.
