Here are the top stories in Decatur-Avondale Estates today:
- The City of Decatur has taken its final steps toward creating homes that will promote the possibility of more affordable homes being built. The Decatur City Commission unanimously approved new zoning amendments, allowing, once again certain styled homes to be built. Duplexes, triplexes, and quads are part of the housing that's been approved. With this approval, up to five units will be allowed on qualified, opposed to only a single house in any residential zone around Decatur. (Atlanta)
- According to celebrity chef Kevin Gillespie, his restaurant Revival, may not open back up in Decatur. The restaurant closed without warning on Jan. 14. Back in early January, there was a break- in. The restaurant's safe, with all of its deposits from the holiday season was stolen and the building itself suffered much damage due to weather conditions. Though the future of the restaurant's location is uncertain, loyal customers can hang on to hopes when calling and listening to the message left on the restaurant's answering machine which said, "Hope to see his customers soon." - Decatur Boxing Club is considered a gem in the community. The gym has been open since 2004 and is located at 137 New St. in Decatur. Its owner Tyrell Biggs has had his fair share of fights, in and out of the ring. After having success as a pro boxer and being the owner of one of "the biggest boxing gyms in the southeast," Biggs found himself defeated and homeless after going through a divorce. Fortunately one of Biggs former clients offered him a deal. Biggs was to run his boxing program in exchange for housing. The deal turned out to be the success and gem that it is today. Biggs continues to train and build the careers of others. One of his clients is his younger brother, Tyrell Biggs. Tyrell won a gold medal in the 1984 Olympics and launched a career in pro boxing, fighting against Mike Tyson. The brothers continue to fight the good cause and have programs in place to help their community. To learn more or to donate, you can visit: https://biggsboxing.com/. (Decaturish.com)
