Decatur Eatery to Host Diwali Celebration With Food and Music

Chai Pani will host a festival for the traditional Hindu "Festival of Lights" and will raise money for a rural medical clinic in India.

Decatur’s popular Indian street food restaurant, Chai Pani, invites locals to stop by from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 23, for a night of delicious food and drink, as well as music, live performances, and a special prize raffle.

The event is held in honor of Diwali, a Hindu mela--or festival--that celebrates the triumph of light over darkness and the inherent goodness in life.

“Diwali signifies one of the happiest days of the year in Indian culture,” said Chai Pani’s owner Meherwan Irani in a news release. “We are proud to showcase our roots by celebrating it with our own rendition of one of the Hindus’ biggest festivals. Along with plenty of mind-blasting Indian eats, including stations of our prized pani puri and kale pakoras, the entire restaurant will be filled with excitement and enthusiasm.”

At Chai Pani’s Diwali Mela, all proceeds from cocktail purchases and 20 percent of the proceeds from all-you-can-eat buffet sales will go toward The Meher Free Dispensary, a rural medical clinic in Maharastra, India. There, thousands of Indian farmers are able to receive the medical care they need at no cost.

Reservations are not necessary to attend this event.
