DECATUR, GA — State Rep. Mary Margaret Oliver, Democratic representative for Decatur, will chair the committee that oversees the budget for the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA), according to a Thursday news release.

Georgia House of Representatives' Committee on Assignments named Oliver the chairman of the House Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Overview Committee, or MARTOC, which is a statuatory committee that provides oversight of the budget for MARTA. As a joint committee with the House and the Senate, MARTOC does not handle legislation and committee members do not have a vote on the MARTA Board of Directors, according to the release.

Oliver will also serve as a member on the Appropriations Subcommittee on Human Resources and the Special Committee on Access to the Civil Justice System, as well as the Governmental Affairs, Juvenile Justice, Judiciary, and Science and Technology committees.

“The economic history of Georgia is about transportation— first rivers, then railroads, airports and interstates,” Oliver said in the release. “Our future will be tied to transit for more of our state, and I am happy to be part of the discussion.”

Oliver was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2002.
