Jason Lary Elected Stonecrest's First Mayor

BREAKING: Newly formed city of Stonecrest elects mayor, two council members in historic vote.

STONECREST, GA -- Voters in the newly formed city of Stonecrest elected Jason Lary as their inaugural mayor in election results tallied Tuesday night.

Lary won 52.2 percent of the vote, with Charles Hill II coming in second (39 percent) and Douglas E. Favors II (8 percent) coming in last, according to results released by the DeKalb County election office.

In a video uploaded to Facebook, Lary celebrated his election win with his wife and close supporters at a dinner. Turns out Wednesday he'll be celebrating as well -- it's his birthday.

"Now we have a chance to start new. Now we have a chance to build our city. Now we have a chance to be the economic king of the Southeast corridor," he said. "I promise you, you can expect outstanding things from the city of Stonecrest."

Lary, a 25-year health care executive, led the Stonecrest YES group that pushed for Stonecrest's cityhood. The race featured three candidates of diverse backgrounds but was shrouded in controversy in the closing days as a flyer mailed by a mysterious group claimed that one of the candidates was mentally ill.

A flyer that circulated days before Tuesday's vote claimed that Hill was a "bipolar manic depressive" and insinuated that he was not fit for governing the newly formed city of 50,000 people.

Also in Tuesday's vote, two people were elected to the City Council, while the other three seats will be decided next month.

Jimmy Clanton won the council race for District 1 while Jazzmin Cobble won the District 3 post, both with 66 percent.
