Violent Weather on the Way

Here are the five things you need to know today, April 4.

1. The beautiful weekend weather should continue at least through midday today with a high around 81 degrees, according to the National Weather Service, but then things will begin to turn to ugly. The wind will pick up, gusting to 30 mph, and there's a chance of a storm after 2 p.m. After 8, the National Weather Service says, severe thunderstorms are a certainty, with strong winds and rain totals of 1 to 2 inches overnight.

2. Cobb County public schools, along with most other school systems in the area, are on spring break this week. That means no school buses driving around, and commuting should be more relaxed because lots of people are out of town. Today is also the 43rd anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., so devote a few of those minutes you save on the roads to thinking about what one of Atlanta's greatest men did for all of us.

3. Spring break means the high school sports schedule will be, well, patchy this week, so our Daily Prep Report won't appear every day. varsity teams aren't playing this week, except for track and field, which will compete in the Peachtree Ridge Invitational on Saturday. baseball and boys lacrosse teams are off until late in the week, while the 11-1 girls lacrosse team has gone to Walt Disney World. All's quiet on the Pope front until the baseball team plays on Friday.

5.
