Walton, Walker Land Theater Nominations

'The Wiz' and 'The Drowsy Chaperone' are up for Shuler Hensley Awards this month.

The Wiz and The Drowsy Chaperone are among the student productions nominated this week for the third annual Shuler Hensley Awards for Excellence in High School Musical Theatre.

Joymichelle Green of Walton is one of six nominees in the costume design category for her work on the Wizard of Oz-inspired musical, which Walton students performed in late March.

Walker’s take on The Drowsy Chaperone in November secured five nominations, announced Wednesday by the : Colin Shirley, who played Man in Chair, for best actor; Katie Arjona, choreography; conductor Todd Motter, orchestra; Max Walker, who played Adolpho, supporting actor; and Bill Schreiner, scenic design.

Altogether, 41 high schools received nominations in 15 categories for the awards, named for the Broadway performer from Marietta. Hensley will join an ensemble of student performers in the opening number at the awards show at the Cobb Energy Centre.

The Cobb Energy Centre’s ARTSBRIDGE educational outreach program hands out the awards. More than 30 professionals from the Atlanta area evaluated high school productions for the awards.

The awards show will be April 26 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15, available through Ticketmaster or the Cobb Energy Centre box office.
