Walton, Walker Tennis Win State Titles

The Pope boys advanced in soccer but the Walton, Pope and Lassiter boys were defeated in lacrosse.

The Walton High School girls tennis team is back in the winners circle.

After having their state record streak of nine consecutive Georgia High School Association state championships broken last season, the Lady Raiders reclaimed the title Saturday in the Class 6A finals.

They downed Peachtree Ridge 3-2 at the Clayton International Park in Jonesboro to finish the season with an 18-0.

As the MDJ reports this morning, No. 3 singles player Johanna Keeline clinched the title for Walton in her match after Peachtree Ridge won the other singles matches. Walton won both doubles matches.

The Walker School doubled its pleasure in the Class 1A private school finals, winning the boys title 3-1 over First Presbyterian and the girls title 3-2 over Mt. Pisgah Christian.

BOYS LACROSSE

Walton and Lassiter went into the Class 6A tournament as two of the favorites -- Lassiter, in fact, was ranked No. 1.

Like their respective girls teams, they were on a collision course to meet in the semifinals.

But both were ousted in quarterfinal play in heartbreaking fashion. Harrison knocked off Walton 8-6, and Centennial edged Lassiter 13-12.

In Class 5A, Northview downed Pope, a state runner-up the last two years, by a 16-8 score.

In the Class 5A girls bracket, two East Cobb-area schools were in action, but also were eliminated Saturday as McIntosh defeated Kell 11-7 and Starr's Mill ousted Sprayberry 12-7 in overtime.

BOYS SOCCER

The Pope boys edged Windsor Forest 1-0 Saturday in the Class 5A quarterfinals, and will face McIntosh Wednesday in the semifinals.
