CCSD : Free Home ES Earns Recognition For Digital Citizenship

Free Home Elementary School’s digital citizenship program has earned national recognition.

The school was awarded Common Sense School certification by the national nonprofit organization Common Sense.  The honor recognizes schools that demonstrate exemplary commitment to educating students to use technology responsibly, think critically, and handle the challenges of technology use including cyberbullying, plagiarism and privacy issues. 

“By preparing our students to use technology safely and responsibly, we are providing them an opportunity to build lifelong habits to help them succeed in a tech-driven world,” Principal Julie Peppers said.  “We’re honored to be recognized as a Common Sense School.”

She thanked media specialist Dawn Barrett for her work to engage all students in digital citizenship lessons, which led to this recognition.  Free Home ES uses Common Sense Education’s research-based resources to teach students digital citizenship skills including internet safety and personal privacy, media literacy and balance and protecting online reputations and managing online relationships.  

“The faculty and staff of Free Home Elementary School deserve high praise for giving students the foundational skills they need to compete and succeed in the 21st-century workplace and participate ethically in society at large,” said Kelly Mendoza, vice president of education programs at Common Sense Education.  “We applaud them for embracing digital citizenship as an important part of their students’ education.”
