Corn Maze Memorializes 9/11

A Hickory Flat tradition will be a tribute to the victims of 9/11 and the soldiers who have died in the past decade.

More than 20,000 people are expected to walk through the World Trade Center this fall. The difference is that these towers are made from corn, not steel, and the only danger is getting lost.

annual corn maze is set to commemorate the events of 9/11 and the fallen soldiers.

In June, owner Ben Cagle, his wife Vicki and brother Levi Cagle decided to plan the maze as a 9/11 tribute featuring an outline of the Twin Towers and the Statue of Liberty.

β€œWe come up with an idea, look around at photos and come up with an idea on graph paper,” Ben Cagle said.

Inspiration for this design came from several friends the Cagle family has serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, Cagle said.

The Cagle’s Farm maze was one of the first in Georgia. It takes about an hour to go through.

In June, they planted the corn in a grid. Then a company out of Utah comes in to map the design and cut the corn. From there, the farm workers maintain the design until the corn is nine or 10-feet-tall.

β€œWe had perfect rain this year,” Cagle said. β€œWe were very blessed to have an inch of rain a week.”

The maze runs Friday 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The cost is $10.Β
