No. 9 Sequoyah stuns No. 3 Chattahoochee

The Sequoyah Chiefs turn it loose on Chattahoochee.

Saturday night, east Cherokee County basketball fans got to witness a few historic "firsts" and an ending that might be talked about for a while, but has been witnessed by fans time and time again for six years now.

senior point guard, Sean Tate had another remarkable night on offense scoring 24 points and going 14-16 from the free throw line to go along with five assists. But it was the points scored off of the great team defensive effort that was the difference between the two teams in the end. Entering the fourth quarter of regulation play, Sequoyah trailed the No. 3 ranked Cougars by 11 points on the superb effort of All-State Forward, Jaron Blossomgame, who's 29 points led all scorers in the game.

However, all those points were scored prior to the fourth quarter. Trailing by eight points with five minutes to go in the game, Sequoyah's defensive intensity picked up and Chattahoochee could not seem to handle the team speed and athleticism unleashed by the undefeated Chiefs. A trapping defense led to a steal by sophomore, Solomon Ajose who passed the ball off to senior, Brandon Alexander for a thunderous two-handed dunk that ignited a firestorm of momentum all flowing in the direction of the Chiefs.

With under three minutes left in the game, Sequoyah trailed by nine points but that is when the senior-heavy team showed the most maturity and the reason they are 8-0 for the first time in the history of the program. Over the final 2:50 of the game, five seniors scored for Sequoyah, including the game-tying three-pointer from Senior forward, Brandon Alexander. That made basket sent the game into overtime and at that point, everyone in the War Lodge knew they had seen this tail before. The group that refuses to lose was about to pull off the biggest win of the season so far. Outscoring Chattahoochee 24-13 in the fourth quarter, Sequoyah managed to limit the Cougars to just four points in overtime and go on to take top spot in Region 7 AAAA with a 60-56 victory.
